28 June 1952

Founded as “Macao General Archives” under Ministerial Legislative Diploma No. 5 within the Civil Administration Services of Macao.

 

1979 Renamed “Historical Archives of Macao”, restructured and moved into the Education and Culture Department to receive records from public services.  
March 1982 Relocated from Sir Robert Ho Tung Library to its present premises at No. 91-93, Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida, Macao.  
1983 Joined the International Council on Archives.  
1986 Moved to the newly created Cultural Institute (now Cultural Affairs Bureau).  
1986 Organized book exhibition "From Portugal to Far East" with the National Library to celebrate the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities image001 image001
1987 to 1989 Operated in the premise of the present Macao Conservatory at No. 16, Avenida de Horta e Costa during the reconstruction of the archives building.  
21 July 1989 Completion of the reconstruction of the building of the Historical Archives of Macao. image002 image002
21 to 29 July 1989 Organized an exhibition of historical documents entitled "Portugal and the Far East" with the Tropical Research Institute of Portugal and the Portuguese Overseas Archives. image003 image003
31 October 1989 Promulgation of Macao's archival legislation under Decree-Law No. 73/89/M and approval of "Regulations of Historical Archives" under Administrative Rule No. 183/89/M.  
1990 Using of PORBASE, a Portuguese database in cataloguing.  
7 to 20 June 1990 Organized exhibition "Early photographs of Macao and Canton" with the Preparatory Committee of the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities.

Organized exhibition "Drawings of Beijing Ancient Observatory in the 16th to 19th Century" jointly with the Tropical Research Institute of Portugal and the Portuguese Overseas Archives to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Ignatius of Loyola and the 450th anniversary of the founding of Society of Jesus. image006 image006

3 February 2000 Renamed from “歷史檔案室” to “歷史檔案館”  in Chinese pursuant to the Order of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture.  
30 to 31 August 2001 Co-organized an academic seminar on archives in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao with Guangdong Provincial Archives Bureau and the Public Records Office of Hong Kong. image014 image014
22 to 24 March 2002 Held a seminar on utilization and promotion of archives comprising of presentations on "Historical Archives and Historical Research" and "Ban on Maritime Activities, Great Evacuation and Macao in the Early Qing Dynasty" by Professor Wei Qingyuan and "Academic Value of Genealogy Records as Archives" by Mr Danny Chin.

15 October 2003 Organized a seminar on management of electronic records, with Mr Pitt Kuan Wah, Director of the National Archives of Singapore, speaking on "From Understanding Basics of Records Management to Managing Electronic Records and Archives" and Mr Li Guoqing, Deputy Director-General of Shenzhen Municipal Archives Bureau, speaking on "Theoretical Framework and Progress of the Shenzhen Digital Archives Project".

5 to 21 January 2006 Co-organized training course on active records management (theory and practice) for public services of the Macao SAR with EASTICA and the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government.  
2007 Adopted the "International Standard for Archival Description" (ISAD(G)) issued by the International Council on Archives (ICA) and developed a new archive management system for description and cataloguing. image020 image020
February 2010 Launched an on-line archive catalogue on the Archives' website.  
12 June to 10 July 2010 Presented an archives exhibition entitled “Remembering Almeida Ribeiro Avenue” to celebrate International Archives Day and China Cultural Heritage Day. image021 image021
17 February 2011 Signed a memorandum concerning strategic cooperative relations in the field of record management with the People’s University of China. image022 image022
11 June to 14 August 2011 Organized an archives exhibition titled “How Many Are We?” in cooperation with Statistics and Census Service of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government to celebrate International Archives Day and China Cultural Heritage Day.

9 June to 9 September 2012 Staged "Witness to Macao History - Chan Tai Pak’s recollections of over half a century" and four lectures around the theme of the exhibition in celebration of International Archives Day and China Cultural Heritage Day.

20 October 2015 Memorandum of understanding for cooperation in archival domain signed between the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government and the General Directorate for Book, Archives and Libraries of Portugal in the National Archive of Portugal. image045 image045
21 October 2015 Cooperation protocol signed between the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government and the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre of the Ministry of Education and Science of Portugal in the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre in Portugal. Under the protocol, exhibition "Shanghai Portuguese Refugees in Macao (1937-1964)" would be relocated from the Historical Archives of Macao to the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre for continuing display in October 2016. The arrangement marked the beginning of a friendly cooperation between the two institutions and a new impulse to the cultural exchange between China and Portugal. image045 image045

April 2016 Organized a seminar for exchange of ideas on business records management for the Social Welfare Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government.
May 2016 Organized a seminar for exchange of ideas on business records management for the Sports Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government.
19 May 2016 Jointly nominated by the National Archive of Torre do Tombo of Portugal and the Macao Archives, the collection of “Chapas Sínicas” (Official Records of Macao During the Qing Dynasty (1693-1886) was recommended by the MOWCAP (Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific) Register Subcommittee formed by experts and approved with unanimous vote by the participating member countries to be listed on the MOWCAP register.

3 June 2016 The General Council of Archives of the Macao Special Administrative Region held its first meeting in 2016 to share updates on the legislation of "Retention Schedule for Common Administrative Records" and "Normative Technical Guidelines on Digitization of Paper Records". Mr Ung Vai Meng, President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, was the acting chairperson of the meeting.
8 June to 4 December 2016 Organized exhibition “Memories of Moments - Macao and Lusophone African and Asian Regions in Photograph Postcards” and related lectures.

4 to 8 July 2016 Hosted a workshop on oral history given by Mr Pitt Kuan Wah, former Director of the National Archives of Singapore.
20 July 2016 Organized a lecture on "Management of digital records and good practices of digital preservation” given by Mr Adrian Cunningham, Director of Digital Archives Program of the Queensland State Archives.

4 to 12 August 2016 Organized a records management training course for the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government.
11 October 2016 to 29 January 2017 Presented the exhibition of the Archives of Macao, "Shanghai Portuguese Refugees in Macao (1937-1964)" in the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre in Lisbon, Portugal.

24 October to 4 November 2016 Organized a records description training course given by Ms Joana Braga, archivist from the National Archive of Portugal.

9 November 2016 Organized a seminar for exchange of ideas on records management for chiefs of the Financial Services Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government.
9 November 2016 Launched publication "Witness to Macao History – Chan Tai Pak’s recollections of over half a century” in the “Macao Oral History” book series.
16 November 2016 The General Council of Archives of the Macao Special Administrative Region held its second meeting in 2016 to share updates on the legislation of "Retention Schedule for Common Administrative Records" and "Normative Technical Guidelines on Digitization of Paper Records” and discuss the normative papers of the draft legislations. Mr Ung Vai Meng, President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, was the acting chairperson of the meeting.
26 to 27 November 2016 Held the launching of publication “Thirty-three years in radio - Interview with the broadcaster Leong Song Fong” in the “Macao Oral History” book series, inauguration of exhibition "Thirty-three years in radio - the broadcaster Leong Song Fong" as well as  related lectures and activities.
