The Macao Historical Archives operates under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, and is responsible for the preservation of records of historic value. Given Macao’s geographical location in a sub-tropical zone, it is essential to actively protect paper records in order to avoid deterioration and ensure their correct preservation. Such measures include regular pest control.

The Historical Archives of Macao will hold another of its popular conservation workshops on Saturday 24th of July from 14.00 to 17.00. This time the focus will be on binding a buttonhole notebook. No previous experience is required but participants must be at least ten years old. Starting 19th of July, please visit the Historical Archives of Macao (open Mon-Fri, 09:30-18.30, Sat, 13.00-18.00) on Tap Seac Square to register and pay the workshop fee of MOP$20 (inclusive of materials and equipment for the workshop).

European colonialism and the responses it inspired in the second half of the 20th century have shaped our understanding of the world today. Portugal played a critical role in this process. In seeking to define and explain this role it is essential to look back to the documents directly related to this period: the records of the Ministério do Ultramar (MU) [Ministry for Colonial Affairs]. Once the period in which consultation of these records might have heightened obvious tensions had passed, the issue of making them accessible to the public became the goal.
