The inaugural edition of “Encounter in Macao — Arts and Cultural Festival between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries” organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao will feature a variety of events and activities. Exhibition “Chapas Sínicas —— Stories of Macao in Torre do Tombo” jointly presented by the Archives of Macao and the National Archives of Torre do Tombo of Portugal will run in two phases, the first from 7 July to 7 August 2018, and the second from 21 August to 7 December 2018. The exhibition's opening ceremony will start at 17:00 on 6 July 2018 at the Handover Gifts Museum of Macao. In connection with the exhibition, a lecture series is scheduled at 15:00 on 8 July. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

The collection of “Official Records of Macao During the Qing Dynasty (1693-1886)” jointly nominated by the Archives of Macao and the National Archive of Torre do Tombo of Portugal has been inscribed by the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) onto the Memory of the World Register on 30 October 2017. The records are reflections on the conditions of the society, the people's lives, urban development, trade and commerce, etc. of Macao during the Qing Dynasty. In addition, they represent the significance of Macao to the world. The exhibition will showcase a selection of over one hundred records to share stories which, though took place in Macao, are of historical relevance to China, Portugal and even major developments in world history.

The lecture series in association with the exhibition will be delivered by Prof. Zhang Wenqin, Professor of History of Sino-Foreign Relations at Sun Yat-sen University; Prof. Jin Guoping, Researcher of the Macao Research Institute of Jinan University; and Dr. Silvestre de Almeida Lacerda, General Director of the General Directorate for Book, Archives and Libraries of Portugal; with a focus on the documentary significance of “Chapas Sínicas” as well as preservation and digitization of records. The lecture series will be conducted in Mandarin and Portuguese with Cantonese, Mandarin and Portuguese simultaneous interpretation. Taking place in the Auditorium of the Handover Gifts Museum of Macao, the lecture series is free and open to pubic. On-line registration for the event can be made in the Cultural Affairs Bureau's "Activities Registration System" at www.icm.gov.mo/eform/event, from 21 June.
