With an objective to promote and increase the awareness and understanding of “Chapas Sínicas”, the second phase of the exhibition will take place in the Archives of Macao from 21 August to 7 December; and an extended exhibition will be staged in the University Gallery at the University of Macau from 5 September to 31 October. Jointly organized by the Archives of Macao and the National Archive of Torre do Tombo and co-organized by the University of Macau Library, the extended exhibition will showcase some of the pieces from the first phase of the exhibition.

In connection with the exhibition, the first lecture called “Boya Lecture” series organized by UM Library is scheduled at 14:30 on 5 September (the first day of the exhibition). The lecture will be delivered by Ms Lau Fong, the Director of the Archives of Macao, with a focus on records from “Chapas Sínicas” and the nomination and inscription of the collection onto the Memory of the World Register.

The first phase of exhibition “Chapas Sínicas — Stories of Macao in Torre do Tombo” jointly presented by the Archives of Macao and the National Archive of Torre do Tombo of Portugal has come to a successful conclusion on 7 August. “Chapas Sínicas” is a collection of records of Macao during the Qing Dynasty. Preserved in the National Archive of Torre do Tombo of Portugal, the collection comprises over 3600 documents, including official letters written in Chinese, the Portuguese translated copies of the letters and other miscellaneous documents. The collection was titled “Official Records of Macao During the Qing Dynasty (1693-1886)” in its nomination for the Memory of the World Register. It was inscribed onto the Asia-Pacific Register of the Memory of the World in 2016 and the Memory of the World Register in 2017 respectively. The records are reflections on the conditions of the society, the people's lives, urban development, trade and commerce, etc. of Macao during the Qing Dynasty. In addition, they represent the significance of Macao to the world and tell stories which, though took place in Macao, are of historical relevance to China, Portugal and even major developments in world history.

Taking place in University Gallery (E1), University of Macau, Avenida da Universidade, Taipa, Macao, the lecture above will be conducted in Cantonese and is free and open to public. On-line registration for the activity can be made at (https://umac.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3Jk97Xq6UUFzlVr).  Seats will be reserved on a first come, first serve basis.
