The Historical Archives of Macao is the public repository of Macao’s unique historical documentary heritage. It collects, processes, protects and makes available the enduring records of government supporting Macao’s memory. In celebration of China Cultural Heritage Day and International Archives Day, the Historical Archives of Macao organized an Open Day on 12 June to increase the public awareness of the function and collection of the Archives, while an archives exhibition titled “Remembering Almeida Ribeiro Avenue”, which also opened yesterday, will remain on display until 10 July.

Almeida Ribeiro Avenue, “the new avenue” as it is still known in Chinese, is one of the most important streets in Macao, created only around a century ago. The exhibition includes historic documents from the collections of records, maps, and photographs of the Historical Archives, with additional photographs from the Macao Museum of Art, to reflect the origins of the avenue, including the plans to cut through the Chinese city, the history of the Municipal Council, a city landmark located on the avenue, and some of the typical businesses to be found there in times past.

Members of the public are welcome to visit the exhibition at the Historical Archives of Macao (open Mon-Fri, 09:30-18.30, Sat, 13.00-18.00). Website of the Historical Archives of Macao: http://www.archives.gov.mo.
