"How Many Are We?" Exhibition Opening Ceremony

Date : 14/06/2011

The Open Day of the Historical Archives of Macao and exhibition titled “How Many Are We?” were opened at 11am on 11 June with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Dr. Ung Vai Meng, President of Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau and Dr. Kong Pek Fong, Director of Macao Statistics and Census Bureau.

The Historical Archives of Macao is the repository of much of Macao’s unique historical documentary heritage.  Many of the records of enduring historical value held in the deposits of the Archives reflect Macao’s important role as a link between East and West for more than four centuries.  In celebration of China Cultural Heritage Day and International Archives Day, the Historical Archives of Macao held an Open Day and opened an archives exhibition titled “How Many Are We?” on 11 June with the goal of reflecting the value of Macao’s documentary heritage and increasing public awareness of the function and collections of the Archives.  The “How Many Are We?” exhibition will remain on display until 14 August.

The “How Many are We?” exhibition focuses on the development of census enumeration in Macao since the 17th century, the challenges in gathering information as well as the characteristics of changes in the demographic structure over different periods, reflecting Macao’s social and economic development over the centuries.  Records, plans, photographs and other historic materials from the Historical Archive’s collection and items from the Macao Statistics and Census Service are on display.

Members of the public are welcome to visit the exhibition at the Historical Archives of Macao (open Mon-Fri, 09:30-18.30, Sat & Sun, 10:00-18.00).
