"Shanghai Portuguese Refugees in Macao (1937-1964)"

In celebration of International Archives Day, the Historical Archives of Macao under the auspices of Cultural Affairs Bureau presents an archival exhibition “Shanghai Portuguese Refugees in Macao (1937-1964)” from 10th June to 6th December 2015. The exhibition was inaugurated with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 18:30 yesterday (9th June) at the Historical Archives of Macao on Tap Seac Square.  The ceremony was graced by Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR Mr Zhang Xiaoguang, President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, Mr Ung Vai Meng, Consul-General of Portugal in Macao and Hong Kong, Mr Vítor Sereno, Associate Professor at the Lisbon College of Education and Researcher at the Centre of Geographical Studies of the University of Lisbon Mr Alfredo Gomes Dias and lender of items to the exhibition, Ms Maria Teresa Véstia.

“Shanghai Portuguese Refugees in Macao (1937-1964)” showcases a selection of over one hundred records from the collections of the Historical Archives of Macao, as well as documentation and materials, including personal items of one of the Shanghai Portuguese refugees Clementina Fernandes. A series of lectures on the theme are scheduled during the exhibition period. The first one will be given by Associate Professor at the Lisbon College of Education, Mr Alfredo Gomes Dias, on the living conditions and experiences of Shanghai Portuguese refugees. The lecture will be conducted in Portuguese with Cantonese simultaneous interpretation at the Auditorium of the Cultural Affairs Bureau on Tap Seac Square from 18:30 to 20:00 on 11th June. Admission is free. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
