Exhibition “Shanghai Portuguese Refugees in Macao (1937-1964)” unveiled in Guimarães

The opening ceremony of the exhibition “Shanghai Portuguese Refugees in Macao (1937-1964)”, organized by the Macao Archives under the auspices of Cultural Affairs Bureau, as well as the launching of the publication Refugiados de Xangai. Macau (1937-1964) by Portuguese historian Professor Alfredo Gomes Dias, was held successfully in the Alfredo Pimenta Municipal Archives of the Municipality of Guimarães, in Portugal, on 3 March 2017.

The ceremony was officiated by the Councillor for Education of the City Hall of Guimarães, Adelina Mendes Pinto; the representative of the President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao S.A.R. Government and Director of the Macao Archives, Lau Fong; and the Associate Professor of the Lisbon College of Education and Researcher at the Centre of Geographical Studies of the University of Lisbon, Alfredo Gomes Dias. The ceremony was also attended by over 30 guests including the Director of the Economic and Commercial Delegation of Macao in Lisbon, O Tin Lin; the Councillor for Culture of the City Hall of Guimarães, José Bastos; the President of Portuguese youth and hostel association Movijovem, Ricardo Araújo; the Director of the Alfredo Pimenta Municipal Archives of the Municipality of Guimarães, Alexandra Marques; the Advisor of the Office of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao S.A.R. Government, Andrea Direito; archivists and researchers.

The exhibition “Shanghai Portuguese Refugees in Macao (1937-1964)”, now inaugurated at the Alfredo Pimenta Municipal Archives of the Municipality of Guimarães, in Portugal, was held in the Macao Archives in 2015  ,and in the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre in Lisbon in 2016. It showcases a selection of over one hundred records that illustrate the historical background of the Macanese diaspora around the world, the social inclusion of the Macanese in Shanghai, the journey of Portuguese refugees to Macao and the aid they received in Macao, as well as the documentation and materials on one of the Shanghai Portuguese refugees, Clementina Fernandes.

The exhibition “Shanghai Portuguese Refugees in Macao (1937-1964)” is held from 3 March to 1 September, at the Alfredo Pimenta Municipal Archives. It is a demonstration of the friendly cooperation and resources sharing between cultural institutions in Portugal and Macao and an example of the ever-growing Sino-Portuguese cultural exchange.
