Projects for the construction of a leprosarium in Taipa Village in 1883 to 1884

Reference code(s) : MO/AH/AC/SA/01/00521

This record contains two projects with plans submitted by the Public Works Department for the construction of a leprosarium in Taipa Village.

The first project on 29 September 1883 states that as a result of the destruction of the dwellings for lepers at Pac-Sa-Lan on the island of D. João by the typhoon on 12 July 1883, it is necessary for the government to build a hospice for the patients. It is proposed that a leprosarium be built in Taipa Village. The facility, which is designed to accommodate patients of both genders, will have a separation wall between the male and female dormitories for the convenience of management. The leprosarium will be constructed on an area of 1,000 square metres, with two dormitories that can accommodate 55 male patients and 25 female patients respectively, both with a patio, kitchen and latrine.  The cost of construction is estimated at 6,000 Patacas.

The second project on 15 January 1884 is submitted as a revision to the project presented in September 1883, whose estimated cost has risen to 7,000 Patacas. The new project is for the construction of a hospice for female lepers, to be constructed on an area of 1500 square metres, with a big enclosed courtyard and surrounded by walls and a moat. The leprosarium will be a single-storied structure with a kitchen, a latrine and a lavatory. The cost of construction is estimated at 1,700 Patacas. The project is attached with tender documents in Chinese and Portuguese.

Neither of the projects was put into action.
