On 24 January 1892, Macao Governor Custódio Miguel de Borja (1890/10/16 -1894/03/24) approved the budget for the building of “Coloane municipal market” in Coloane village, to which the relevant plans were attached. The market occupied an area of 15 x 20.5 metre. It was surrounded by a stone wall of 1.7 metre high and had entrances on east, south and north. At the centre of the market stood a pavilion of 5 x 12.5 metre, with a tiled truss roof supported by four 3.5 metres Doric pillars on each side. The wall-less design, which was similar to that of the market in the Carmo Fair in Taipa, allowed for both natural ventilation and sunlight.

Named "Mercado Municipal Conselheiro Custódio de Borja" (literally “Counsellor Custódio de Borja Municipal Market” in English) as requested by the Administration of the Municipality of Taipa and Coloane, the municipal market of Coloane was inaugurated on 5 March 1893. The inauguration ceremony was officiated by Governor Custódio de Borja and participated by other guests as shown in the record.
