Four years after S. Domingos Bazaar (Bazar de S.Domingos) in the central area of the Macao Peninsula was destroyed in a fire on 13 November 1893, Macao merchants Lu-Cau and Vong-Atai applied to the Municipal Council of Macao on 16 November 1897 for the construction of S. Domingos Market (Mercado de S. Domingos) on the site. A project and a plan for the construction, which were stated to be enclosed in the application, are not included in the extant record which shows the reviews and opinions of the Municipal Council, Public Works Bureau and Health Department.

Considered obsolete and unhygienic, S. Domingos Market was demolished for redevelopment by the Municipal Council of Macao in 1949. A modern S. Domingos Market was completed on 12 October 1949 at a cost of $550,000 and it was the most impressive of all the markets in the Portuguese colonies at that time. The New S. Domingos Market was inaugurated by Macao Governor Albano Rodrigues de Oliveira on 31 January 1950, a day in remembrance the Martyrs of first Portuguese republican revolution. Being the biggest market among the six markets in Macao, S. Domingos market was also called "Central Market" until its closure on 30 July 1995.

In 1996, S. Domingos Market underwent another redevelopment to become a seven storeyed market complex including basement, with the height of 24 metres and construction area of 12,196.8 square metres. The reconstruction work was concluded in October 1998.
