A record of Civil Administration on Macao citizens’ passport application (1897/6/7 to 1901/3/14) shows the application procedure and format of a passport over 100 years ago.

 

Application procedure: A Macao citizen who intended to travel to Mainland China, Japan and Siam for business or missionary activities must submit a written application to the Governor of Macao stating his/her destination and reason for travel. In addition, the applicant should first obtain a "Certificate of No Criminal Record" from the Delegate of the Crown Prosecutor and Treasury (Delegação do Procurador da Corôa e Fazenda).

 

Upon approval, the Governor of Macao Province, also the representative of the Portuguese Legation in China, Japan and Siam, would issue a Portuguese passport in the following format:

 

 

This passport was issued to a priest for travel to Doumen for missionary work.
