Creation of parishes of São Lázaro and Nossa Senhora de Fátima in 1965

In an official correspondence sent to the governor of Macao on 3 April 1965, the bishop of Macao Paulo José Tavares (1961-1973) stated that due to population growth, the current division of Macao peninsula into three parishes was not sufficient to meet the needs of the diocese to serve the citizens, and a study on a redivision of parishes was urgently requested.

On 4 April 1965, the governor of Macao commented on the official correspondence and referred it to the Civil Administration Services Bureau for urgent study and report;

On 5 April 1965, the Civil Administration Services Bureau asked the Public Works and Transport Bureau for a map of the Macao city and a map of the current division of parishes; the maps were provided as requested on 7 April 1965.

On 10 April 1965, the Macao governor appointed by Administrative Rule a commission chaired by the Administrator of the Municipality of Macao and composed by two representatives of the Macao diocese and one representative each from the Municipal Council of Macao and Public Works and Transport Bureau for a study of the division of parishes on Macao peninsula. The commission met on 27 May 1965 and resolved to suggest creating parishes of São Lázaro and Nossa Senhora de Fátima, in other words, to increase the number of parishes from 3 to 5, namely,

Parish of São Lourenço
Parish of Sé
Parish of São Lázaro
Parish of Santo António
Parish of Nossa Senhora de Fátima

The suggestion was approved and promulgated with Legislation no. 1676 of 7 August 1965 which stipulated the division of the Macao peninsula into 5 parishes and the repeal of Legislation no. 257 of 9 September 1932 about the administrative division on Macao peninsula.

This legislation about Macao’s administrative division has remained unaltered and unchanged since then.
