Summer in Macao sees a small rise in visitor arrivals, despite the hot weather and typhoons typical of this season. The image below takes us back to 1989 when Macao received 5.6 million visitors, most of them arriving by ferry. Outside the simple jetty, rickshaws jostle with taxis along the dusty sidewalk to take visitors into town.

In response to the city’s growth (last year the Special Administrative Region received over 35 million visitors), this area has been transformed with a series of land reclamation and infrastructure projects.
