1623 Amacao in Chyna

This curious view of Macao was published by German poet and topographer Daniel Meisner in his collection of town plans and views "Thesaurus Philo-Politicus Schatzkastlein" (1623/4). The text above the title reads "Non Ex Quovis Ligno Fit Mercuris", which means "You cannot make mercury out of wood". In common with several early maps of Macao, the peninsula is presented with North lying to the left. There are some people on the streets, including Chinese carrying a sedan chair and a Portuguese gentleman on horseback with a servant holding a parasol over him. The lower left hand side of the print is taken up with the bizarre scene of a South American Indian training a donkey to jump through a hoop.
