Following the success of its Binding Workshops in 2010, the Historical Archives of Macao will organize two Bookbinding Workshops in July and August. Each workshop consists of two morning sessions over a single weekend, held in the Historical Archives building on Tap Seac Square.

The Open Day of the Historical Archives of Macao and exhibition titled “How Many Are We?” were opened at 11am on 11 June with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Dr. Ung Vai Meng, President of Macao Cultural Affairs Bureau and Dr. Kong Pek Fong, Director of Macao Statistics and Census Bureau.

Given Macao’s geographical location in a sub-tropical zone, it is essential to actively protect paper records in order to avoid deterioration and ensure their correct preservation. Such measures include regular pest control.

A memorandum concerning strategic cooperative relations in the field of record management was signed between the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region and the People’s University of China.

The Historical Archives will hold a Binding Workshop on Saturday 18th of December from 14.00 to 17.00. Participants can learn more about binding, one of the techniques used to protect Macao’s precious documentary heritage, as well as gain a deeper understanding of how handmade books are sewn together. Conservation professionals will introduce and demonstrate this traditional technique and support participants as they make their own hardcover notebook.

The Historical Archives of Macao will hold another of its popular conservation workshops on Saturday 27th of November from 14.00 to 17.00. This time the focus will be on mounting works of art. No previous experience is required but participants must be at least fifteen years old.
